Mission(s)

An every member mission making Gospel-centered disciples for the glory of God

Philosophy of Ministry

We need a clarifying and unifying philosophy of ministry. A philosophy of ministry explains the way we do ministry—it is the blueprints of our approach in making gospel-centered disciples for the glory of God. There are two key elements to a healthy philosophy of ministry: gospel centrality & gospel tension.

Gospel Centrality

The gospel is the good news of the person and work of Jesus Christ. His disciples are both made and matured by grace through faith in this Gospel. With the deepest conviction, we believe the Bible is authoratative,  infallible, inspired, and sufficient to reveal His will for Salvation, witnessing to the person and work of Jesus on every page. We are His church, His blood-bought bride. All we do should therefore be born out of and empowered by the Good News of Jesus, that he might receive the glory. The gospel is not just the front door, but every room—the foyer, the kitchen, the living room, the bedrooms, the attic — of the God-built house that is the church. We never grow out of our need for the gospel, we grow in our reliance upon it — upon Him.

Gospel Tension

Gospel centrality leads to gospel tension—having a robust, well-rounded ministry that holds together the good and varying gifts God has given us. United in Christ, not merely by shallow similarities or agenda, we sacrifice personal preferences and rights for the good of others, all in adoration of our King who “made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Phil. 2:7). With such faith in Christ (who holds it all together) we can simultaneously embrace healthy tensions. Embracing and engaging such tensions will allow us to honor tradition and hone innovation; to edify the body and evangelize the city; to go deep into the word and wide into the world; to love the young and the old; to be a people of compassion and candor, of gladness and gravity.

Special Initiatives

Our church is our primary local mission. “Church” is not a building or something we do; the church is the people of God who gather to worship Jesus and scatter on mission for the sake of the world that God so loves. Below are special initiatives that are meant to both bless our non-Christian friends and neighbors and help the members of our church body to see themselves as missionaries in the Bay Area, citizens of heaven who are placed here by God to be ambassadors of good news to all.

Inklings Offsite Mission

Inklings Coffee & Tea and The Common Room is now open at 530 Main Street in Pleasanton!

In the very heart of Pleasanton, with a heart for the city, will be a vintage, pub-style, third-wave coffee house named after the famed literary discussion group associated with the University of Oxford—The Inklings. With warm conversation and welcoming environs, Inklings will embody the gospel in its hospitality, charity, and dedication to excellence in serving and seeking the welfare of our community.

The Common Room will be a mid-size venue alive with the humming sounds of concerts, art galleries, debate forums, classes, seminars, and more. The Common Room will exist to serve as a meeting place, a hub for church cooperation, community participation, and gospel-centered leadership development.

Every Member Mission

EveryMemberMission.org is one tiny piece of the way the mission goes forward. Members from our church community and others around the Bay Area utilize their writing talent for the glory of God, aiming at the heart of their readers with the transforming power of the good news of Jesus Christ. You’ll find posts from pastors, theologians, and academics, but you’ll also find posts from mechanics, nurses, and college drop-outs, because the mission belongs to all of us as much as the gospel itself.

iN House Publishing

For certain books of the Bible that we study through as a church family, our pastors write and publish a gospel-centered devotional book with daily readings and prayer exercises for Monday through Saturday to help you nourish your faith by diving deeper into God’s word. Read a digital copy below!

"Mission begins with a kind of explosion of joy. The news that the rejected and crucified Jesus is alive is something that cannot possibly be suppressed. It must be told. Who could be silent about such a fact?"

Supported Missions

After His resurrection, Jesus commanded His followers to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Why is God so determined to fill the earth with His image-bearers (Genesis 1:26-28)? Because human beings flourish when freed from the self-centered power of sin to care for the earth and serve one another in love. That is why ten percent of all giving to Valley Community church goes to supporting ministries and missionaries working both locally and globally to help make gospel-centered disciples for the glory of God. We support missionaries because we love God’s good creation, especially His image bearers.
